Today, intelligent driving assistance features are becoming increasingly common in vehicles, greatly enhancing the driving experience. L3: Conditional Automation
L3 represents conditional automation, where the vehicle can handle driving tasks in specific scenarios, such as heavy traffic on highways. At this level, the car can autonomously accelerate, brake, steer, and even overtake other vehicles. Nevertheless, achieving L3 autonomy requires highly accurate environment sensing and often relies on high-definition maps for vehicle-to-road coordination.
Moreover, legal frameworks and responsibility boundaries are not yet fully established for L3. In the event of an accident, it can be difficult to determine whether the driver or the system is at fault. Therefore, while the driver may relax during certain conditions, they must be ready to take over immediately when prompted.
L4: High Automation
L4 introduces high-level automation. Within designated areas — such as specific urban zones, industrial parks, or restricted roadways — vehicles can operate entirely without human input. For example, some logistics centers use L4 autonomous trucks for goods transport, and pilot programs for driverless taxis are already underway in select cities.
Achieving L4 requires a combination of advanced sensor technologies, including LiDAR, cameras, and millimeter-wave radar. Powerful computing and decision-making systems are also necessary to quickly process complex road information. However, L4 systems are restricted to predefined areas and remain costly to implement.
L5: Full Automation
L5 is the ultimate goal — full automation. Vehicles will be capable of handling all driving tasks under any circumstances, without any human intervention. In fact, traditional controls like steering wheels, pedals, and gear shifts may be eliminated entirely. Passengers could relax, work, or entertain themselves during the ride.
Currently, L5 remains in the experimental phase, facing challenges such as sensing in extreme weather conditions and decision-making in highly complex traffic environments. Furthermore, comprehensive regulations and public acceptance must be achieved before widespread adoption becomes possible.
